Mathematics, PhD

    Program Description

The mathematics department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers a PhD in a variety of areas of mathematics. The American Mathematical Society has ranked the program in the top group of U.S. research departments.

The department has distinguished research groups in:

    Algebra
    Analysis
    Combinatorics
    Geometry
    Mathematical biology
    Number theory
    Probability
    Topology

The department is large enough to provide the quality and breadth required for a major research department, yet small enough that graduate students have close interactions with the faculty.

There are over 30 faculty members and approximately 60 graduate students each year.

The department offers a wide selection of graduate courses, from foundational sequences in the core areas to an array of more advanced topics that vary from year to year.
