History, PhD

    Program Description

The College of Arts and Sciences history graduate program is a community of scholars pursuing the study of a wide range of geographical areas and topics.

The University of Oregon supports the study of history through an array of related interdisciplinary programs and a research library of more than two million volumes, along with many other resources.

The history department has an outstanding graduate faculty. The faculty is large enough to have a wide array of geographical and thematic specialties, but small enough to provide close working relationships between faculty and graduate students, as well as a collegial environment.

The PhD program combines an emphasis on research and teaching designed to equip students to compete successfully for faculty positions. Students can engage with specific focal fields in:

    North American West/ Borderlands
    Indigenous People/Native Americans
    Pacific history
    Modern US
    Modern Africa
Asia (with particular strengths in the history of China and Japan)
    Latin America
    Russia
    Early Modern and Modern Europe
    History of Women/Gender/Sexuality
    Environmental history
History of Science, Technology and Medicine
    Intellectual History
    History of the Book
    Architectural History
Most doctoral students come to UO with a master’s degree however, a small number of highly qualified students with bachelor’s degrees may be admitted to the PhD program.
